Steam Has Refunded 329,970 Copies of Rust Totaling $4.3 Million

Garry Newman, Founder of Facepunch Studios and the creator behind the highly successful Half-Life 2 mod Garry’s Mod has released some interesting data. According to a twitter post from Gary, Steam has offered 329,970 refunds for the massive multiplayer sandbox game Rust. The total price for the refunds amounts to a whopping $4,382,032.

Steam started offering refunds in 2015 which was a pretty big move on their part as video games have generally never been refundable, both physical and digital copies. There are some requirements that must be met in order to request a refund from Steam though. The game must be purchased through Steam within two weeks of the refund request and the game has to have under two hours of play time on the registered account to be eligible for a refund.

According to Newman’s Twitter post, the most common reasons for the refunds are “not fun” and “bad performance”, which Newman stated are fair reasons. Alongside the data he provided, Newman also said the refunds equate to roughly a 6% loss. He didn’t share how many total copies Rust has sold, but going off of his figures, the game is selling remarkably well, despite the large amount of refunds.

Rust is currently available on PC via Steam for $19.99 and currently holds a lifetime “Very Positive” rating among Steam players.

I purchased Rust a few days ago, I have enjoyed the game so far. I think it's a great game for the price, especially since it's on sale right now. I have some performance issues, my PC has decent specs but I can rarely get anything above 30fps. I think it's fun, but it can be frustrating with the other people killing you over and over again.

GrandExchange I hated rust ever since they got rid of the og rust, only real rust players remember.

Yeah it would have been nice if they kept the old version and gave you a choice but the new version is better anyway
