The Spotify app will be free to download and available for both free and premium Spotify users. If you’re a free user, your music will be interrupted by ads, whereas premium users can listen commercial-free and will also have a higher quality sound. Other than that, it sounds like the features on Xbox One’s Spotify app will be the same for both.
Not only can you stream your own saved music and playlists, but Xbox is providing playlists based on different gaming genres, including a playlist curated by Major Nelson’s Larry Hyrb himself. The best part about the app, however, is that you can change the music that’s playing on your Xbox One through the Spotify app on your phone, meaning you don’t have to leave the game to select the proper tunes.
The Spotify app was originally supposed to be a console exclusive for PlayStation, where the app has experienced a huge number of streams. However, the nature of that partnership, in which Spotify and PlayStation worked together to launch a separate app called PlayStation Music, might be part of the reason why Xbox was able to snag an actual Spotify app.
Regardless of how or why Spotify is on Xbox One, it will be interesting to see how the number of streams compares on Microsoft’s console.
