Players often have to piece together the stories behind each Overwatch map through hints found in the world, but a new animated short following characters Junkrat and Roadhog does the job for us. After being kicked out of Junkertown for their anarchic tendencies, the pair devises a scheme to get revenge on the town’s queen by sneaking in bombs disguised as a treasure offering. The plan predictably goes awry, and the payload full of treasure must be escorted by force.
Set in the Australian Outback, Junkertown is a make-shift home for a group of lawless scavengers known as Junkers, and it shows. After passing through the main part of the shantytown, the map takes the payload through the Scrapyard—a gladiatorial arena with a rotating platform—with every inch of the new environment steeped in the wasteland aesthetic.
The new map was revealed during Blizzard’s Gamescom 2017 preview stream, but no release date was offered. Gamescom attendees will get the opportunity to try out the map at the show, suggesting that it will land on the game’s public test region once the event is over. If this wasn’t enough Overwatch for the week, another animated short is planned for release during Blizzard’s full conference on Wednesday, August 23rd.
