Now, here’s where the conspiracy theories come in – are Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2 not on the list because they won’t be enhanced for the Xbox One X, or is Sony just blocking an official announcement? Sony and Activision have a very close relationship, with both CoD: WWII and Destiny 2 releasing their DLC on PlayStation 4 first. Could these timed exclusivity deals include a clause that Activision can’t promote the fact that their games may look/run better on Xbox One X?
Eurogamer posed this question to Microsoft’s vice president of gaming Mike Ybarra, and he seemed to strongly hint something was going on behind the scenes.
“We’re working with all developers, including the ones [behind Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2] to make sure the best versions are on Xbox One X and it's up to them when they want to actually talk about what, if anything, they are doing. We want to align with their messaging and what they want to say, when they want to say it. We work with them on timing, how we can help them optimize. I can't comment on any limitations they might have.”
Eurogamer then explicitly asked if Sony was forcing Activision to keep their Xbox One X enhancements on the downlow, to which Ybarra replied…
“I have no direct knowledge of that.”
Well, that isn’t exactly a denial. Just because Ybarra has no direct knowledge of the situation, doesn’t mean it isn’t generally known within Microsoft. Honestly, this is all a bit silly – in the end the proof will be in the pudding. If the Xbox One X versions of Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2 look or run better, people will know from day one, so any effort to hide it is kind of pointless.
Elsewhere in the interview, Ybarra discussed the delay of Crackdown 3 and the fact that the Xbox One X basically only has one major launch title (Forza Motorsport 7). Apparently, the system doesn’t really need launch titles:
“When I look at the Xbox family I don't feel like we have to come out with six new games just for X, it'll play everything that's come out, back compat will work on it, elements like that. I don't know if we're still in the world of having to have big, exclusive titles just for one box, versus the promise that games you buy will work and look even better on X. It's up to the user to choose.”
