Fans on NeoGaf and Reddit that were able to watch the leaked footage reported the gameplay shows off chapters two and three in the upcoming survival horror game. According to the clip, chapter two has a more scripted approach, as players will watch Sebastian go through the hoops of entering STEM to save his daughter. However, chapter three kicks-off the less linear approach that has been touted since the game’s announcement.
Sebastian will be able to explore several new corners of STEM using a device called The Communicator, which will reveal new items and paths to take. Inventory hunting will be a major feature in The Evil Within 2, as the new crafting system will allow for greater customization of consumable items and upgrades. “Gunpowder being a new crafting component is cool as well,” said one Reddit user. “Reminds me of the early Resident Evils.” According to the footage, players will be able to quickly switch between melee weapons to pull out items that won’t break on the first hit, allowing consumables to be used sparingly.
As for the less linear level design, it seems there is still a good deal of indoor segments like in the first entry, but mixed with “some large and detailed outdoor areas.” Hopefully, this could create an interesting balance of stealth gameplay found in traditional survival horror games and the more modern run-and-gun approach.
It’s unclear if the Gamescom footage will be released in an official capacity before the game’s launch, but for now, fans can get to know one the sequel’s new villains, Stefano Valentini, through his reveal trailer.
The Evil Within 2 launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 13th.
