PUBG developer is not happy about Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode

Bluehole, the developer of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, said today that it has “concerns” about the recently released Battle Royale mode in Fortnite.


The developer issued a statement earlier claiming there are “growing concerns” in the Battlegrounds community about Fortnite’s replication of the model.

Fortnite, developed by Epic Games, received an update over a week ago that added a 100-player, last man standing game mode which is nearly identical to the Battlegrounds formula. The mode will receive a standalone release next week for free.

When announcing the mode, developers from Epic openly cited King of the Kill, and Battlegrounds as inspiration for the Fortnite iteration. “We’ve had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of UE4, the engine we licensed for the game,” Bluehole VP and executive producer Chang Han Kim said.


“After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known.”


Bluehole went on to say that the similarities extend to the structure, core gameplay, and even the UI elements. “We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press,” Chang Han Kim went on.

“This was never discussed with us and we don’t feel that it’s right.”

While Bluehole isn’t taking action for now, the company said that it’s “contemplating further action.”


It’s interesting that the developer mentions community feedback as the impetus for this release. I have not personally seen any online outrage about this from the PUBG community. Nonetheless, we’ll see how this develops over the coming days.

What about ARMA? It has battle royale and you don't see Bohemia complaining.


I'm not to familiar with ARMA myself. All i know is you can tell this was just them trying to gain more players from the mode itself. You can understand why they aren't happy about it as they haven't even said anything to Bluehole about it they have copied quite a bit from it as well.


You should read in to things more before making assumptions, TTG never posts the full story. The actual PUBG developer has not made these comments, VP from Bluehole has, the actual PUBG developer has said previously that he isn't bothered if people play on the whole Battle Royale game mode as long as they place their own twist on it, Fortnite has done that. The only issue here is that Fortnite has referenced and spoken about PUBG in order to bring more attention to them that is only issue.

Numerous games and Mods have been made before PUBG (Arma, DayZ, H1Z1, The Culling, Last Man Standing, Unturned, Rust,Minecraft...), which is why they wont press legal action. They just want Fortnite to stop quoting PUBG...


The whole thing is based on the Hunger games anywhere

PUBG is made by people who made H1Z1.


Theres only one person involved with PUBG who was involved with H1Z1....

Dayz and H1Z1 both had this type of idea. Then PUBG comes and takes this idea becomes popular thinking they own it? This is the gaming world. Good ideas are always "stolen".
