September 25th marks the 10-year anniversary of Halo 3‘s release on Xbox 360. To celebrate, 343 Industries has released a TL;DR blog post, but within that blog post was one truly interesting kernel of information.

It turns out that Halo 3 (which, as we just mentioned, is 10 years old) might be getting some new content in the near future.

While describing the process of recently bringing Halo 3 (as well as Halo: CE Anniversary, Halo 3: ODST Campaign Edition, and Halo 4) to Xbox One’s backward compatibility program, Halo community manager Brian Jarrad mentions that 343 Industries has “been working closely with [Xbox’s back-compat team] on some additional awesome things for Halo 3.”

There’s no word yet on what those “additional awesome things” might be. Considering the game has already been around for a decade and was previously developed by an entirely different studio, it will be interesting to see what 343 Industries decides to add to the classic FPS, especially if it involves Halo 3‘s gameplay, which is markedly different than that of Halo 4 or Halo 5, 343’s two solo iterations in the franchise. And again, to be clear, all of Halo 3‘s currently existing DLC is available absolutely free as part of the backward compatibility release, so it would be difficult to imagine this tease doesn’t refer to something completely new.

If for some reason you’d rather play Halo 3‘s maps on Halo 5, even though Halo 3 literally just went backward compatible last week, Halo 5 is adding the “Halo 3 Classic Throwback Playlist,” in which classic Halo 3 maps that were remade in Forge will be playable with tweaked settings that will make the gameplay more resemble Halo 3. This “community playdate” will kick off on September 25th at 3 p.m. PT.
