The two new maps, Cape Helles and Achi Baba, are in earlier stages of development—so early, in fact, that developer DICE has yet to add any textures.
Cape Helles is located on the Gallipoli Peninsula and resembles a World War I version Battlefield 3‘s Gulf of Oman. It features a beach on the southern part of the map and a series of trenches in the northern section, and it seems like tanks, planes, and boats are all available. The artillery cannon introduced in In the Name of the Tsar‘s Albion map also makes an appearance on Cape Helles, though it’s unclear if players will still have to repair the stationary gun to activate it.
During the CTE, Cape Helles featured a new-ish game mode: Conquest Assault. Last seen in Battlefield 3, Conquest Assault tasks one team with defending seven flags while the offensive team must capture the flags. Conquest Assault will be included as the new game mode for Turning Tides.
The other map, Achi Baba, is an infantry-only map that uses a series of canyons and cliffs to funnel players into the action while also acting as cover. This map definitely looks favorable to players who prefer to get into the action and less favorable for snipers with its tighter corridors and rocky cover.
In addition to the new maps, the Turning Tides CTE introduced six new guns included in the expansion, and so far each class seems to be getting some interesting new weaponry.
The assault class gets two new guns. The Maschinenpistole M1912/P.16 is a primary weapon machine pistol with an insane rate of fire but comes with a small clip and a long reload time. The other assault weapon, the M1917 Trench Carbine, looks like a variation on a weapon currently available for the pilot class, except that it comes with an increased clip size and a decent rate of fire.
On top of the new guns, the assault class is going to be gifted with a new gadget that will help take down planes, and it’s a new rocket gun. The new rocket gun will function pretty much exactly the same as the current rocket gun; however, instead of firing artillery shells, this new rocket gun will fire flak that will explode in proximity to a plane. It’s unclear if players will be able to spawn with both types of rocket guns, but it definitely evokes similar decisions that engineer players would have to make in previous Battlefield titles.
The medic class will get one new gun with two new variants: the Farquhar-Hill Optical or Storm (Range or Stability in the CTE). This rifle has a slower rate of fire but each round does decent damage and comes with 20 rounds per magazine, giving it an advantage in that regard to similar weapons like the Cei-Rigotti and Mondragon rifles.
The support class also gets one new gun. The Browning M1917 will come with a telescopic variant in addition to its standard variant, and it features a 250-round box magazine, which is so far the largest magazine in the game. Additionally, the weapon can fire around 100 rounds before it overheats, making it a favorite for players who like to suppress their enemies.
The scout class is getting two new weapons. The Type 38 Arisaka rifle resembles the Gewehr M.95, with a fast bolt action making up for a weaker punch. The Carcano M91 Carbine rifle seems to be a more long-distance rifle, like the Gewehr M.98, with a slower bolt action. However, both rifles seem to be meant for scout players who like to play the objective, as both only feature infantry, iron-sight variants.
The new faction, the British Royal Marines, was playable on the test version of the new maps, and included a surprise faction within that faction: apparently the ANZAC soldiers we believed were coming with Turning Tides will be represented as the medic class for the British Royal Marines.
The other two new maps coming with Turning Tides, Heligoland Bight and Zeebrugge, were not playable during this test. Some other new additions, including the Infiltrator Elite class, L-Class Destroyer and C-Class Airship vehicles, and grappling hook melee weapon, were also not included in this particular test.
