While it currently only exists on the PC platform, PUBG was announced earlier in the year for an Xbox One release. The game has no shortage of active players on Steam at the moment, but the Xbox One release should continue the game’s rapid growth on the console version as well. It’s still in early access even on the PC, but a competitive scene is already starting to develop with tournaments and other esports opportunities starting.
Speaking to IGN at one of these budding tournaments, Brendan Greene, the creator of PUBG, spoke about his expectations for the Xbox One. Greene was asked whether he thought the Xbox One X and Xbox One would prove to be a competitive platform for the game, and he said that it’s hard to tell.
“I don’t know, we’ll see,” he said about the Xbox One version. “Like with our PC version, we want to see if the community will drive the competitive scene. We’re not going to say that this is a competitive game.”
Greene spoke about the custom games that have been held as well as the amateur tournament as examples of how the competitive scene could begin, but it’s ultimately on the players.
“We hope that if a competitive scene wants to develop, it will, if the community wants it,” he stated.
Looking forward to the future when Greene was asked about the game’s state 5 years from now, he said that they hoped to continue working on the game as a service. He didn’t speculate on any plans for a sequel, instead making it sound as though players will still be able to play PUBG in the foreseeable future with quite a bit of support. He also mentioned the possibility of buying a boxed copy of PUBG for the Xbox One, and when pressed about the subject, he said that he thinks that’s something that players can expect when it’s released.
