Microsoft recommends not to use a surge protector on Xbox One X

Often times when we get an expensive machine or gadgets like the PC, TV, or even game consoles, we plug it into a surge protector to protect it against random spike damage. With the release of the Xbox One X, there have been people complaining on how the console won’t turn on anymore. It seems one of the problems causing it is people are using surge protectors on their Xbox One X.

According to Microsoft, the Xbox One X’s power supply has a built-in surge protector and thus connecting it to another surge protector, the console cannot reach the full power that is needed for optimal performance. So when you reach a point where your Xbox One X won’t turn on, and you know you are using a surge protector, remove it from there and plug it in directly. It may not get all the power it needs to boot up.


If it still doesn’t turn on even after plugging it in to the direct outlet, try resetting the power supply by unplugging the power cord from the console, wait 10 seconds, and plug the cord back into the console. Then turn it on by pressing the Xbox button on the front of the console. Still not working? Definitely try calling Xbox Support for repair.

Soon as I saw this I plugged it into my wall, not risking that shit. I haven't had any problems before however I do notice a small difference.

iShane lol this is so stupid if i had this at my setupd id have nothing else on as my TP Link needs to be in a wall and if i had this Xbox in the wall how could i power everything else i only have two sockets


Use a extension cord or power strip. Don't use a surge protector. They are 2 different devices.

This actually happened a month or 2 after I bought my Forza Xbox one back in 2015. Was playing a game and it just shut off, wouldn't turn on anymore. Chatted with support and sure enough it wasn't directly connected to the wall which fixed it.

This is quite an odd situation. I typically use extension cords / surge protectors simply because they turn 1 plug into 5-6 plugs. Having to plug the X straight into the wall will take some getting used to, as I am constantly moving around between school and home.

I've been using a surge protector for my One X and no issues, maybe ppl are using cheap ass protectors xD

They claim that it was designed for this but i bet if a surge had to happen it would fry the PSU.
