PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds developer PUBG Corp always said it’d add a killcam to the game one day, and the feature has been in the works since the game launched in Steam Early Access back in March.
Talk has been sparse about it, though, until it showed up in this week’s 1.0 test patch, the same patch that has the ballistic overhaul, new vaulting updates and plenty of other features.
The killcam is available in all game modes, but in duos and squads, you’re only able to see it after all of your squadmates are dead to prevent players from calling out targets for their friends. In solos, however, you can play it a couple of seconds after you get the death screen.
It functions the same way a Call of Duty killcam does: showing you the last few seconds that resulted in your death from the perspective of your attacker. But that’s not all, the minimap is also displayed from their perspective, and it has a few little extra additions that show their line-of-sight, and highlights their icon with a muzzle flash every time they fire.
See this GIF below from k4rst3n to see all the action happening on the minimap. That is very helpful.
Beyond that, it’s the same as any of the killcams you’ve seen in other games. There are some issues with desync, though, which makes some of the footage a little jumpy. It’s not clear if that’s what the enemy player experienced (as a result of lag, for example) or if it’s a problem with the killcam itself. Watch the videos below to see how it works.
And finally, it wouldn’t be a PUBG story without some bizarre bug. Here, we see the player swimming somewhere where there isn’t water, successfully killing his opponent anyway.
