Activision is keeping an eye on Fortnite’s success

3.8
Activision, which has on more than one occasion said that it’s keenly aware of the success of battle royale games, has talked a bit more about how it sees the subgenre.

During Activision’s earnings report for Q1 2018, the publisher was asked a few times about the explosive success of Fortnite in particular, and the effect the burgeoning battle royale subgenre has had on the industry in these past few months in general.

Though Activision didn’t get into too much detail, the publisher, by way of CFO Spencer Adam Neumann, has admitted that Fortnite’s popularity has “impacted” it.

It did not divulge if that translates to a drop in sales or player engagement for its games, opting instead to put a positive spin on it by saying that battle royale brings younger audiences to the hobby, which benefits all.

What’s more interesting, though, is that the company is particularly fond of Fortnite Mobile’s success. The game has made a lot of money in a short time, but it’s special in a way other mobile games aren’t.

The simple reason is that Fortnite Mobile is the same exact game you can play on consoles or PC. This, as Activision puts it, shows that it’s possible to “successfully bring immersive gaming experiences like battle royale to mobile in both Western and Eastern audiences.”

In other words, this is a fully-fledged console game being played on mobile with few compromises, and that could open the door for future games that take advantage of this fact to elevate the offering players on mobile typically expect.

Activision is like sheep just follows the rest instead of being original

This sounds like activision wants to make a stupid ass cod game that can be played on mobile vs console players. Sounds like another waste of time thats not going to go anywhere.

XeCookie_ This is interesting wonder what their gonna do.. Possibly buy out Fortnite (which I doubt for various reasons but is a possibility) or are they going to follow the trend..?

They don't have near enough money to buy fortnite. Tencent (who owns 40% of epic) is by far a much larger company. Not even close. Tencent also owns riot. So no, its isn't a possibility at all.

Who says there buying the whole thing tho lol? You don't know how much $$ one is packing either. that's just a fact

Well, typically smaller companies don't buy out bigger companies.

But it is possible for them to just buy the game itself. However, I doubt they'll let the game go to anyone else. I'm 90% sure Fortnite going into any other Devs hands could ruin the games success, because they'd trash any of the original stuff that made it good in the first place. That's my opinion, though.

It's going to get really old fast when every company seems to want to make this type of game mode

Damn I didn't know that. Based on the title of the article I kind of thought the same thing as XeCookie. Glad that's not the case honestly.

More focused on the mobile? I guess I could see it with it's insane success. Just makes me wonder what's next in the world of mobile gaming
