PUBG has lost half of its player base on Steam since January
Since then, PUBG’s player numbers continued to decline month after and month, and that 3.2 million concurrent peak is now down by around 50% to 1.7 million.
The average number of players has seen a similar drop. This is no secret, and it’s clearly visible on tracking sites like Steam Charts, and Githyp.
It’s also not surprising, the vast majority of games decline in popularity over time. For PUBG, however, it’s a little disappointing to see. PUBG has consistently exploded in popularity with every month, and it managed to break records in ways we never thought possible.
That said, 1.7 million players is nothing to scoff at. Plenty of games would be happy to have even 10% of that, and it’s unlikely to affect queue times in the near future.
This drop is also likely why, for the first time ever, PUBG has gone on sale, as PUBG Corp. boasted 50 million sales on PC, and Xbox One.
It’ll be interesting to see if the sale gives these numbers a boost.
It’s clear that PUBG is no longer the leader in the battle royale genre, even if it continues to be the most played game on Steam. The undeniable success of Fortnite, its fiercest free-to-play competitor, has certainly had an effect on the direction of PUBG.
This week, we got a Fortnite-style Event Pass, alongside the launch of the game’s newest map, which is specifically designed to offer faster action – not unlike what Fortnite players are familiar with.

PUBG isn't a bad game. It's that fortnite is free, and pubg isn't. That's what it comes down to.

I don't get you? every game has a peak concurrent players at a certain time, FIFA, COD, BF, they just drop by around 1/3 or 1/2 over time because people get bored and play other games. it doesnt mean the game is not successful?

They still get 1.2m concurrent players and have been for a while now, just because they had a peak time when there was 3 million players online doesn't mean the game is losing players. I still play from time to time, which is what other players tend to do as well
I really don't see why people are getting so salty towards PUBG.

Partly due to them cracking down on AFK farmers. I don't think people realize how many accounts there were just to farm BP and make some money. I mean it wasn't half the player base but it was a good chunk

This article is actually really misleading. I'm not that fond of PUBG I play it once in a while, but the way this article represents the game is folly.
So when they talk about Peak Players they aren't talking about an average player base. They are talking about one specific moment in time when the game had a large amount of players online. More than likely when they released the new map on the main game. Fortnite has seen the same thing. However they won't release their stats like PUBG for whatever reason who knows.
As far as the battle pass, that wasn't Fortnites idea either, it was DOTA2 that made it what is today.

I was thinking of trying it for the longest time but after suing epic for being competition and adding a battle pass system to a paid game this game can die off and I wouldn't care one bit.
