343 Industries recently hosted a chat on its official Mixer page and touched upon Halo: Infinite a bit.
According to the studio’s Jeff Easterling, the game is indeed a sequel to Halo 5 and stars our beloved Master Chief, which was already confirmed during E3 this year.
“It’s Halo 6,” he said (thanks, Gamespot). “Don’t think of it as a weird prequel kind of thing. It’s the next story, the next chapter in what is going on.”
Tacking a number on the end of Halo is something 343 has wanted to stop doing for a while. Back in 2014, Microsoft corporate vice president and head of 343 Industries Bonnie Ross said as much.
“At some point, we do want to stop numbering. Especially on Xbox One,” she said. “At some point we need to drop the number and still [let you] know you’ve got a big story coming. We don’t want to be Halo 17, when Master Chief’s like 80. We’re not Final Fantasy, we can’t do it.”
Our first look at Halo: Infinite was a cinematic affair. It was a rather lovely trailer which showed off the new engine, even if there wasn’t any gameplay to be found.
And it was good to see Master Chief again at the end, which is unsurprising considering it will totally focus on his story, something 343 Industries learned the hard way with Halo 5.
A release date for Halo: Infinite has yet to be provided.
