EA CEO Discusses Jacksonville Shooting, Promises Improved Security

3.5
The shooting incident that took place yesterday in Jacksonville during a Madden NFL 19 tournament has left the video game industry quite shaken. And even though Electronic Arts already made a statement on the matter, the company’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, released an even more detailed statement today, talking about the families affected by the tragedy, and assuring that future events will have better balanced security.

Here’s the full statement, verbatim, from Wilson:

To Our Players and the Gaming Community,

I wanted to share some thoughts about the horrific and senseless act of violence that occurred in Jacksonville at the Madden competitive gaming event. I know many of us, myself included, are filled with shock and grief. Our teams have been working non-stop to do what we can to respond to this terrible situation.

First and foremost, it is an unthinkable tragedy that Taylor Robertson and Elijah Clayton, two of our top Madden competitors, lost their lives in this way. They were respected, positive and skilled competitors, the epitome of the players and personalities at the heart of our community. Their love of competition was evident through their participation in our events over the past few years. We are committed to supporting Taylor and Elijah’s families through this difficult time, and we send our deepest sympathies to their loved ones, to those injured yesterday, and everyone affected.

The event was a qualifying tournament for the Madden Classic, our first Madden EA Major competition of this season. While these qualifying events are operated independently by partners, we work with them to ensure competitive integrity and to gather feedback from players. We have made a decision to cancel our three remaining Madden Classic qualifier events while we run a comprehensive review of safety protocols for competitors and spectators. We will work with our partners and our internal teams to establish a consistent level of security at all of our competitive gaming events.

We’ve all been deeply affected by what took place in Jacksonville. This is the first time we’ve had to confront something like this as an organization, and I believe the first time our gaming community has dealt with a tragedy of this nature. Please take time to support each other through this challenging time.

Andrew Wilson

CEO, Electronic Arts

In addition, the following message also appears when players start up Madden NFL 19.

Our thoughts are with those affected by the tragedy.

I'm glad it's been addressed and it's sad they'll have to get improved security because of this, it shouldn't happen in the first place, period.

Mario350 fun fact before i fully analysed the video, they looked at the kid before he shot but they continued to play, so it was their fault for not all at once beating the shit and or disarming the kid, but its also ea's fault for no security check for guns, the whole thing about that is just funny and sad but still there was alot of people who say the kid pull the weak a$$ gun out none of them wanted to do anything hint why this happened

Go disarm him yeah as long as he doesn't see you coming, I wouldn't want to get shot ngl but I would also try to disarm him if he didn't expect it. Also the security wouldn't really check for guns at a video game tournament like there isn't any need. I understand that gun violence is out of control but you wouldn't expect that at all

I honestly can't believe how stupid you are. Yea go disarm him bro like its a video game and then get your ass shot 4 times in the chest because you are on top of him. Literally every single thing you are told about what to do when someone pulls a gun on you is run and hide. How can you possibly blame the victims in this? I bet you the kind of guy who owns katanas or some shit and thinking how lucky he was that you weren't there cause you would have used your autistic trainings to disarm. You are an absolute joke. You think your a bad ass or something who is gonna run on someone who has a gun?

EA has no control of security from independent partners. It was a local venue with only 50-100 persons. Though, I do agree venues should be checking bags regardless of the nature of the event. There's so much that could of been done to prevent something like this smh.
