Nintendo: Some Switch Games Won’t Support Cloud Saves Due to Cheating

3.9
Yesterday, we reported that a multitude of Nintendo Switch titles and ports possibly won’t support cloud saving when the console’s online service launches this month. Nintendo recently commented to Gameinformer with the reason why this will be the case in some of the titles. You can read their full quote down below:

The vast majority of Nintendo Switch games will support Save Data Cloud backup. However, in certain games this feature would make it possible to, for example, regain items that had been traded to other players, or revert to a higher online multiplayer ranking that had been lost. To ensure fair play, Save Data Cloud backup may not be enabled for such games. To ensure that Save Data Cloud backups cannot be used to unfairly affect online multiplayer rankings, the feature will not be enabled in Splatoon 2.

You can read our original story. Earlier this month, Nintendo delayed their upcoming Direct event due to an earthquake in Japan. It’s likely that during the Direct we would’ve heard more about the Nintendo Switch’s upcoming online service that’s still supposed to be coming out this month. We still don’t know much about the console’s online. Players can pre-purchase a subscription so they’re ready to go at launch.

Luckily, even if Switch’s online services aren’t fantastic at launch, a year-long subscription will only run you about $20. You’ll need to subscribe to play any and all online multiplayer games with your friends unless a developer decides otherwise. We’ll be sure to keep you updated once the Nintendo Direct does go live sometime soon.

That's a shame, I understand the implementing of this though.

Well this sucks, but still cant wait to get a Switch.

Makes sense. As long as it's to prevent people cheating in online games I don't see the issue.

When it says some, as long as that means where save game cheating could give an inherent advantage in a multiplayer setting then it's fine, but if it means some single player titles and games of that nature, it's pretty stupid.

I don't see the point of this as it wouldn't mess with online games, but I guess I can see the business perspective, people will spend more time playing the game rather than just modding it and getting bored.

coolbunny1234 I think Craig said it best. Savegame cheating won't ever effect online play, which is really the main concern. If it's small modifications, which it generally is with Nintendo, I don't see the big harm. Obviously, Nintendo disagrees.

They literally said "To ensure that Save Data Cloud backups cannot be used to unfairly affect online multiplayer rankings, the feature will not be enabled in Splatoon 2."

Why does it matter who cheats on a save game anymore? If people wanna cheat, let em cheat. They had to buy the game so if they wanna ruin it, let em.
