Apple held its annual iPhone launch event today, and alongside of the premium iPhone Xs and Xs Max, Apple also announced the cheaper iPhone Xr. The company is promising an iPhone X experience, but with an LCD.

The device includes a 6.1-inch 'Liquid Retina' display, which gives it a 326ppi pixel density, the same as previous standard Retina devices. It's still a True Tone display though, with a 120Hz refresh rate.

It's made of 7000 series "aerospace-grade aluminum", with more durable glass. It's IP67 rated, so it's only water-resistant, unlike the more premium Xs models that are IP68.

Just like its more premium counterparts, it's powered by an A12 Bionic chipset, a 7nm quad-core chip that also includes a neural engine for dedicated machine learning tasks. This means that it can perform five trillion AI tasks in a second, whereas the A11 could do 600 billion.



This also results in camera improvements, although the iPhone Xr is a single-lens camera, so you don't get Portrait Mode like you get on the dual-lens models. The lens is the same as the main one on the iPhone Xs, which is 12 megapixels with an f/1.8 aperture.

The front camera, however, is the same as the iPhone Xs. It's a seven-megapixel sensor, and it supports Portrait Mode using the IR camera.

The iPhone Xr will come in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, and it starts at $749. You can pre-order on October 19, and it will be available on October 26. It's available in black, white, red, yellow, coral and blue.
