Nintendo made the clarification through a statement to IGN, quelling any major concerns.
“If a Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, users won’t be able to access their Save Data Cloud backups. However, Nintendo will allow users who resubscribe within 180 days to access their previous Save Data Cloud backups.”
Still, Switch owners are still irked that such an important feature such as cloud saves are locked behind a paywall. Not to mention, certain games like Splatoon 2 and Dark Souls: Remastered are not compatible with the feature due to concerns of online cheating; should someone were to lose or damage their Switch, these save files would be forever lost.
Roughly $20 a year just for online play and cloud saves might be a steep price for some people, so be sure to check out our guide on how to save money by setting up a Family Membership.
