Activision Loves All the Attention From Battlefield 3

To say that EA and Activision are business rivals are a bit of an understatement, EA was once what Activision is now – a giant publishing company with two mega franchises that are so big that no company would even dare take them head-on.

The franchises I’m referring to are of course, World of Warcraft and Call of Duty. Oh, and that part where no other company would take them head-on?

No company other than EA that is. The Madden publisher has not been coy about its goal of “taking down” Activision’s Call of Duty franchise, their “weapon” of choice? It’s none other than Battlefield 3.

The DICE developed shooter has been making waves since its impressive gameplay display at this year’s Games Developers Conference (GDC).

Is Activision concerned with Battlefield 3 going head-to-head later this year against its own Modern Warfare 3?

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg shares his thoughts on the matter.

It sounds trite but it’s true: we focus on what we need to do to make the best games we can. We don’t pay much mind looking at what the competitors are doing. I know they are focused on us… well that’s all I’ll say.
EA’s own CEO, John Riccitiello has been very vocal about this rivalry, even going as far as saying that he’ll “be very surprised if Battlefield 3 doesn’t take a significant share” out of Call of Duty this year.

Of course all that name-calling and mudslinging can also work the other way, as Hirshberg himself admits.

Well, I think EA might talk about our games in the press more than we do,” he adds in, “So, the first thing I say to them is ‘Thanks for the assistance in building awareness.
Of course, the Activision CEO does admit that they take their competition very seriously, and he even acknowledges their competitors.

But when you think about it, we’ve had tough competition every year for Call of Duty. It’s never been easy. This is one of the most competitive genres in one of the most competitive industries. Last year we had Halo: Reach and Medal of Honor, and it’s not like they weren’t amazing developers gunning for the top of this mountain either. And it’s the same this year – Gears of War is back along with lots of other games.
So, of course, we take all the competition really seriously. But at the end of the day I really mean it when I say we are focusing on the finish line, not the competition. We are making the best game we can, and are throwing every resource, innovation and all the creativity we can at it. And hopefully that will maintain our position.

COD SERIES IS THE BEST.THERE IS NO OTHER GAME THAT IS AS GOOD AS THE COD SERIES ONLINE.MANY GAMES HAVE TRIED TO COPY THE FUNCTIONS OF THE GAME BUT AS WE ALL KNOW NONE OF THOSE GAMES HAVE BEEN AS SUCCESSFUL AS THE COD SERIES. COD SERIES OR DON'T PLAY VIDEO GAMES :)

iTsunami Call of Duty cant and will never be beaten only because its a Classic.. and no matter what game comes out with more fun and new stuff.. CoD will always be loved because pretty much every kid grew up playing CoD games.. BF3 looks nice.. But i would choose a CoD game over it ANY DAY.. Thats like saying a new alien game will beat Halo.. It wont.. Even if Halo gets boring it will always be loved because its a Classic.

Cod has only been popular for like 4 years...

actually COD has been played alot since the first one but you were to ignorant to ssearch and I grew up with COD basically with my xbox every game of CoD got a larger audience over the years and better features. I have no doubt thet CoD will smoke Battlefield 3

The call of duty series is half amazing (infinity ward) and half crap (treyarch) but it is still better than battlefield... Why? because of the gameplay. So this frostbite engine might be 'best engine to date' but people dont think that EA has already shown a LOT of the things battlefield will have. Whilst Activision havent but activision are also working on a new engine.

You say that MW3 will be better based on Activision making a new engine even though it's IW mixed with other companies making the game. Let's look at the past however since those games are far off. BFBC2 compared to MW2. Graphics BFBC2>MW2. Campaign BFBC2>MW2. Multiplayer BFBC2>MW2. I will expand on the multiplayer for you since i know you will try and rage me. BFBC2 doesn't have everything wrong that CoD has. CoD has so many problems i.e. hacked lobbies that they ignore and don't try to fix making the gameplay trash. Go into any MW2 lobby and it's hacked. BFBC2 has never had hacks for it that is widely spread for the most part. BFBC2 has bullet drop unlike CoD. BFBC2 has Helicopters unlike CoD. BFBC2 has tanks and other vehicles unlike CoD. BFBC2 is just way more advanced the only reason that CoD takes over in sales is because little kids have their parents buy for them since they think thats what real war is like.
No, COD is only really more successful because of it's marketing.
- Get a controversial level for the press to rant about
- Make a load of vague trailers to excite people
- Focus more on marketing than making the game good
That's pretty much all they do.
Also because of the fact that it's easier to jump into and simpler than Battlefield

Even if Battlefield might have better content, we also know, that MW3 is going to get WAY more online play that BF3. Like really, its happened too many times. It's hard to compete with the CoD series, no matter if people trade the game back in or not. Each year it get Most Anticipated and each year launch day sales increase. And I can garuntee, we have all been in that position where we say we are not getting the next CoD because of how much the previous one sucked..but we still buy it.

But that's beside the point. Realisticly, the CoD series has W A Y more people to back it up than Battlefield, and no matter how much better BF3 is they aren't going to hang with the big boys in this one.. sorry.
