In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nintendo of America’s President Reggie Fils-Aime was asked why Red Dead Redemption 2 specifically isn’t on Switch and whether or not that would be a game he’d like to have on the platform. While Fils-Aime said he would “love” to see RDR2 appear on Switch, he explained that when Rockstar Games was creating the project, they were already too far into development by the time Nintendo informed the company of the Switch. Because of this, it would have taken too long to then port the game over to Nintendo’s platform when their first goal was to simply finish the versions they were already working on.
Fils-Aime’s full comment was as follows:
“Absolutely. We’d love for it to be there. But again — and this is where there needs to be an understanding of just the development process — Red Dead has been in development for years, time that predated any communication of Nintendo Switch. So, from the developer’s mentality, they need to move forward and finish the game they’ve been working on and then be in a position to look at other opportunities. Any game from a key third-party that’s coming out now, typically that development started well before any conversations about Nintendo Switch. What happens moving forward? We’ll see. But that’s how you wind up with a situation with Red Dead not being available on our platform.”
As Fils-Aime goes on to say in the comment, many other third-party games other than just that of Red Dead Redemption 2 likely had its development started far before the Switch was ever presented to developers. Because of this, the onus to then bring the game to Nintendo’s platform later will fall to the developer with them deciding whether or not it is worth their time to bring over. While we have seen some notable instances of this in the past with games like Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Dragon Ball FighterZ, it’s not always a surefire lock that devs will bring their games to Switch.
Whether or not Red Dead Redemption 2 ever comes to Switch will fall on Rockstar Games to decide but if I were a betting man, I’d guess that it’s not likely to come any time soon — if ever. If anything, we’ll sooner see the game arrive on the PC platform, but even that arrival still could be a ways off.
