Keighley made the announcement over on Twitter this morning that 26 million people watched The Game Awards 2018 last week across all various live streaming platforms. Viewership was said to mostly increase across all major platforms with Twitch specifically reaching 1.13 million concurrent viewers at one point. Additionally, voting from fans increased by 50% compared to in 2017.
To put these viewership numbers in context and further explain just how massive The Game Awards have become, merely two years ago in 2016, the show’s viewership totaled 3.8 million viewers. That number tripled to over 11 million in 2017 and how now doubled to what is the 26 million statistic that Keighley announced today.
The pace at which the show has grown is likely attributed to it becoming more readily available to watch in other countries, but also surely speaks to the quality of the program as well. While it was a somewhat bumpy road to get to this point with The Game Awards, it now seems to be more often than not well received by almost everyone who watches it. It’ll be interesting to see how Keighley and company can once again draw more eyes on this product in 2019.
This year viewership of #TheGameAwards more than doubled over last year to 26 million live streams. This is simply unbelievable. Thank you for watching and supporting us across these past 5 shows. Gaming only keeps growing. pic.twitter.com/pd0bIJ3AID
