There hasn’t been much revealed about Streets of Rage 4 since its initial trailer, other than it still exists. While fans were able to get a glimpse of the art style, a new handful of screenshots gives us the best look at the game thus far.
As previously reported, Streets of Rage 4 is coming from developer Lizardcube and publisher DotEmu, having collaborated together on the remake of Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap. One could see hints of the style from that game in these new screenshots, though obviously there’s a bit more grit here. It also has a similar aesthetic to the forthcoming Windjammers 2, which is also coming from DotEmu.
Axel and Blaze return as the playable characters in this fourth game, which is reported to take place ten years after the third game. The character sprites have a high-definition hand-drawn style to them, while environments have some color, with a large focus on shadows.
Being a young’un, the Streets of Rage series is something that I missed, so I’ll leave it up to more loyal fans to decide whether or not it is true to the original games. One thing I know for certain from the word of mouth—it won’t be the same unless original music composer Yozo Koshiro returns.
Streets of Rage 4 will arrive sometime in 2019, though platforms have yet to be announced.
