Metro Exodus Will Release Exclusively on the Epic Games Store

4.3
The Epic Games Store’s list of exclusive titles just continues to grow. Today, publisher Deep Silver announced that its upcoming first-person shooter Metro Exodus will now forgo launching on Steam and will instead release digitally on PC exclusively for the Epic Games Store.

It’s worth noting though that if you have already pre-ordered Metro Exodus on PC via Steam or another platform, Deep Silver will continue its commitment to those purchases. If you bought the game on Steam, you’ll still be able to download it through that marketplace come launch day. This also goes for all future DLC that the game will receive. For example, if you have Metro Exodus on Steam, you’ll still have access to purchasing the downloadable content at a later date once it releases. Pre-orders for Steam though will be closing as of today.

Klemens Kundratitz, CEO of Deep Silver, gave the following statement on the decision to release Metro Exodus in this manner and the reasons why they believe it will benefit the game:

“We are delighted to partner with Epic to bring the digital PC version of Metro Exodus to market. Epic’s generous revenue terms are a game changer that will allow publishers to invest more into content creation, or pass on savings to the players. By teaming up with Epic we will be able to invest more into the future of Metro and our ongoing partnership with series developer 4A Games, to the benefit of our Metro fans.”

Deep Silver also made brief mention that both Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux will also be arriving on the Epic Games Store later this year. Metro Exodus itself will also retail for $49.99 on the storefront compared to the $59.99 price that it was on Steam. It seems that with better margins, Deep Silver could potentially afford to sell the game at a lower cost.

This is the second major game of this first quarter of 2019 that has opted to spurn other digital distributors in the pursuit of partnering with Epic. The other title, that of The Division 2, will also be launching exclusively through the Epic Games Store–along with Ubisoft’s Uplay–when it releases come March. This definitely seems to be a growing trend among publishers and it’ll be interesting to see how many more exclusive titles Epic can bring to its platform.

Metro Exodus is scheduled to launch next month on February 15 and will be coming to PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Smart move by epic. Likely really terrible move by A4. No doubt epic would have signed a blank check from A4 but this is really a PR disaster for them.2 weeks from release. Selling physical copies branded with steam but don't have steam codes. They clearly knew about this deal before they made it public as they said non of the physical copies will have steam codes and they would have been producing physical copies for some time now.

I understand Steam's cut from games is more than Epic's but other than that I don't see why people are so quick to ditch it. I love Steam's hand off approach, sure it can be toxic but I feel it's one of the last fronts where they don't support censorship and respect free speech.

Seems alot of games are leaving steam for other stores. Wonder what they'll do about it.

This game is going to fantastic. Since I'm console this doesn't matter to me but it's a great pull for epic!

This one is huge for epic and terrible for steam. Just goes to show that steam might not be on top for much longer.

The Epic launcher is really giving Steam a run for their money. It's good to see this type of competition, hopefully, this means steam can do something good to even this out.
