Google Announces Its New Gaming Platform "Stadia"

3.7
Today, as anticipated, Google unveiled its brand-new gaming platform to the world during its GDC panel, dubbed Stadia, a streaming platform that runs via the Chrome browser and can run on phones, computers, TVs, and tablets, and switch between all of them instantly. It's not a console as some anticipated, but rather a streaming platform, which Google believes is the future of gaming.

Details on the Stadia are still flowing in, and Google says it plans to share more this summer, but in the meanwhile here's a rundown of some of its more salient features:

Cross-platform play is supported, with cross-saves and progression that can be transfered over from other platforms.
A new save-state feature that allows you to share your save-state with other players.

Google assistant support that allows players to never leave the game to look something up.

Supports 4K and 60 FPS at the moment, but there's plans to scale up to 8K and 120 FPS in the near-future.

Features 10.7 teraflops of power, which is much more than PS4 Pro's 4.2 and Xbox One X's 6.0.

Google also unveiled its unique controller during the presentation, which features a share button, a built-in mic, and can connect to Wifi.

Stadia is poised to release sometime in 2019, but only in selection regions (Europe, United States, Canada) at first.

As you may know, Google isn't the only one rushing to the space of gaming. Verizon is also getting into gaming and is currently prototyping and developing its own Netflix-style subscription service that will work similarly to Xbox Game Pass. Meanwhile, Snapchat and Facebook are pushing into gaming from the platform side of things. In other words, they're trying to compete with YouTube and Twitch. Meanwhile, Amazon has been trying to crack into the space the past few years with its own games and developer toolset, as well as its acquisition of Twitch. All of this is to say, Google isn't the first company to come rushing to gaming in light of the market's rapid growth. And it probably won't be the last. What will be interesting to see is how the traditional big three: Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo respond to everyone trying to get a piece of their pie. Gaming hasn't been this crowded ever, it's exciting.

Can't wait to see what this new gaming platform and the future holds even though them controllers are hideous.

Not sure how I feel about it. It seems cool streaming the games from their servers and shit but idk. It'll either flop or be massively I may try it out

Maze All I'm gonna say for now is those controllers look trash. The mock up ones you guys posted a few days ago were much nicer

LMAO. Are you delusional? The mockups look like a controller from the 90's like the SNES for example. Either you're trolling just doing the usual by increasing your post rep lol. Another possibility is you liking retro controllers more than modern controllers (like the xbox) which is fine but is unusual

I mean, I just have a personal preference lmao just like everyone else. The color scheme of the controllers looked good because they actually had the google colors. The actual controllers are still trash cause the thumb sticks are right next to each other

Not going with the Google colors will be better for marketing period. I'm assuming they don't want to be labeled under the whole "oh it's from google" motto. who doesn't want a different color scheme for their controllers nowadays? Would you rather have the same old Xbox controller with the green ring and white body or a color scheme that you like personally? As for the design of the controller, its got a PS4 feel for sure and that controller is either loved or hated, personally, it's not a bad look just never really liked the two controller sticks next to each other. Keeping my eyes open about it though.

Wow this can go 1 or 2 ways IMO a big flop or one of the biggest additions to gaming.

The controllers don't look that bad in my opinion, xbox still has the greatest controller layout IMO and this is similar to it so it isn't bad. Stadia itself is what I'm super excited for.
