New PS3 Model Removes HD Video Playback (Component)

4.5
Sony has confirmed that an upcoming PlayStation 3 model will not support HD video playback over component cables. What this means is that if you want to watch Blu-ray with a newer model PS3, you'll need to own an HDMI cable for your console as well. HD gaming will still be playable over the component cables, and Sony has confirmed that this change will only affect video playback. The reason behind the changes point to Sony's Advanced Access Content System, a DRM for high-definition video requires that high-definition video come over either HDMI or DVI.

The change will be sweeping across all Blu-ray players starting in 2014, and it looks like Sony is getting a jump on the standard. The model in question will be CECH-3000 model which Sony confirmed in a recent press release. So if you are planning on purchasing a PS3 in the future, these changes could affect you if you either don't have a television that uses HDMI, and if you do you'll need the cable to go alongside your new purchase.

Most people should have them, if not, you can pick one up on ebay for like $5, and the ones i got lasted longer than a monster cable

I'd say a very high percentage of people own a tv that uses HDMI so I can't see this being a big problem for the majority. If anything this change could / should have been forced on many consoles a long time ago.
