On the specs front, we learned that Sony will be continuing its partnership with AMD, using a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi GPU, as well as a third generation AMD Ryzen chip boasting an eight core 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture.
Recently, while speaking with CNBC, AMD CEO Lisa Su got to talking about the PlayStation 5 and the role AMD are playing in its development. Su spoke about how excited he is to be working on the PS5, which he called “a great honor”, while also teasing the system’s “special sauce”, which of course he did not elaborate on.
“We are so honoured and proud to be part of Sony’s next-generation PlayStation,” said Su. “This has been a really long-term partnership with them. We love gaming. We think gaming is a really good secular growth market. What we have done with Sony is really architect something for their application, for their special sauce. It’s a great honor for us. We’re really excited about what the next generation PlayStation will do. And happy to be a part of it.”
Devkits for the PS5 have been sent out to several studios in the industry, but Sony recently confirmed that the console wouldn’t be launching within the next 12 months– which makes sense, because even after 6 years since its launch, the PS4 is continuing to sell very well across the world.
