When the Sonic the Hedgehog move trailer first released a few weeks back, many were upset that the iconic character’s look in the film didn’t reflect his appearance in the video games. After a few days of this upheaval, the movie’s director, Jeff Fowler, said that they would be altering Sonic’s design in the film. However, with the movie due out in November 2019, many wondered just how realistic it would be to make any drastic changes at this point with so little time left.
Well, as of today, we now see how these changes will be possible. As announced by Fowler over on Twitter just recently, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has now been delayed into 2020. The film’s new release date is that of February 14, 2020, rather than its previous November 8 date. Fowler stated alongside the delay announcement that the team is, “Taking a little more time to make Sonic just right.”
Honestly, this whole saga surrounding movie Sonic and his design has been pretty shocking to see unfold, but this seems like the correct move. Not only is Sonic’s design (hopefully) going to be changed for the better now, but this delay allows the visual FX artists ample time to make said changes without potentially needing to crunch. I really can’t commend Paramount enough for making this decision and hopefully, it makes the movie that much better as a result.
At this point, it’s hard to know when we might see Sonic the Hedgehog again, but let’s just keep our fingers crossed that Paramount gets the design right this next time around. While you usually only have one shot to knock something out of the park, Paramount has been given a second opportunity here with Sonic’s look in the film, and for their sake, I’m hoping they can appease the masses this time.
