PS5 Uses AMD’s Radeon Navi With New RDNA Design

4.2
Sony may be skipping E3 this year but the announcements regarding the technology of the PlayStation 5 continue to pour in. During AMD’s Computex Keynote, it confirmed that Sony’s next-gen PlayStation console would make use of the new AMD Radeon Navi (as noted by Benji-Sales on Twitter). This comes with a new 7nm design called RDNA.

Along with 1.5 times the performance-per-watt and an improvement of 1.25 times the performance-per-clock over the GCN, RDNA also features a new compute unit design as per a recent press release. This is meant to improve efficiency and provided increased instructions per cycle (IPC).

Latency and power consumption should be lower while bandwidth is increased due to the multi-level cache hierarchy. The graphics pipeline has also been optimized for high clock speeds and performance-per-clock. While the PlayStation 5 is still a ways off (don’t expect it until 2020), the technology driving it already looks insane. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
