Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally planned to hit PS4 early next year but in the larger scheme of things, this will only be the first installment of an undetermined amount that will tell that entire story of FFVII. As such, it seems easy to assume that future entries will later come to next-gen platforms considering both the Xbox Scarlett and PS5 are likely poised to release at the end of next year. But as for the first entry? Well, it seems like that could come to next-gen platforms in time as well.
Speaking to Game Informer, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda was asked about the potential of Final Fantasy VII Remake coming to next-gen platforms, and he didn’t shoot down the notion. In fact, he essentially confirmed that Square is already planning with next-gen in mind.
“It’s the hottest topic at the moment and we thought you might ask us that. I believe that our teams have made it so that the game will support both the next generation and the current generation of consoles,” Matsuda said. “I believe it is being developed so that it is going to be playable on both, so I’m not really concerned about that and I believe that the fans are also going to be able to enjoy it on both, including the next-generation of consoles.”
As for whether or not Matsuda means that an entirely next-gen specific version of the first part of Final Fantasy VII Remake will be arriving, it’s hard to say. Considering we don’t know how either the PS5 or Xbox Scarlett will specifically deal with backward compatibility just yet, it’s hard to know if last-gen games will receive a drastic boost on new hardware rendering ports as unneeded moving forward.
It’s also worth noting that Matsuda specifically didn’t mention only the PS5 when talking about Final Fantasy VII Remake and instead just broadly mentioned the “next-generation of consoles.” Whether or not this remotely indicates that Final Fantasy VII Remake could be making its way to Xbox platforms in the future is hard to say, but perhaps it could be in the cards.
As we continue to inch closer to the arrival of next-gen hardware, we’ll surely begin to learn more about what Square might have planned for this long-awaited return of FFVII. Until then, Final Fantasy VII Remake is planned to hit PS4 next year on March 3, 2020.
