"GTA inspired London riots", paper claims

Lawlessness, civil disobedience, rampant criminality and violence. All could be used to describe the events witnessed in Tottenham and Enfield over the weekend. Oh, and they could also be used to describe a certain video game.

And while Codemasters’ F1 series hasn’t been credited for the success of Sebastian Vettel and I’ve not yet read any stories thanking Populous for inspiring God himself, some people have seemingly linked Rockstar’s title to the tragic events.

Tonight’s copy of the London Evening Standard could claim that the London riots seen in the past 48 hours were “inspired” by famous games series Grand Theft Auto, MCV can reveal.

Two people – one a police officer in Tottenham and the other an Enfield resident – told reporters that they believed the popular game series was the catalyst behind the breakdown of law and order.

A member of the Evening Standard news team confirmed that at the time of speaking, the GTA quotes were to be included in the article. However, the source would not rule out the possibility of alternations being made before the paper hits presses.

DopestDope_Eva Well i think games do inspire violence among people, just look at that guy in Norway if i recall he used "Modern Warfare 2 as training". Then there was the (United States) teenager who killed his mother and hurt his dad because they didnt let him play Halo 3.

All comes down to game's, but i dont think GTA is the cause of the London riots.

MW2 was not training, the only thing that game gave him was Inspiration to use deadly weapons. Video games can't train anyone.


This story is a load of ****. The media find any game they want to relate to this riot. Last time I checked, GTA didn't have any riots or stuff like that.

You must be stupid. If you actually read the Norway articale it axtaully said " Used Modern Warfare 2 for training".Please dont talk if you dont know what your talking about.

i hate when the news does this they negativley influence people on the subject of video games. in every article they have they always so the cons of it because they could care less about the pros meaning talking to friends having fun and then they blame violent video games for all violent actions in real life games dont inspire people the only time i would believe this is when there is a mentally ill person involved considering then and only then that may be an excuse.

I've played GTA since I was 10 and I'm only 13... I've never burned something down or killed a guy. Games don't inspire people...
