When the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trailer appeared in E3 2015, the trailer ended with “Play it first on PlayStation 4.” Twitter user @Nibellion pointed out that this tagline changed in 2019 to “Available worldwide 03.03.2020,” giving some hope that perhaps it would only be a timed exclusive before moving to other platforms. This was supported when Xbox Germany’s Facebook page advertised the game as releasing on the same date as the PlayStation 4. However, that was quickly confirmed to be a mistake by its social media team.
To put the rumors down for good, VGC contacted a spokesperson from Square Enix to ask about the exclusivity debacle. The spokesperson responded:
“As previously announced, Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released for the PlayStation 4 on March 3rd 2020. We have no plans for other platforms.”
So that seems to be that, putting the nail in the coffin for gamers besides those who own a PlayStation 4. It is a surprising move, given how much anticipation surrounds the remake and the sheer size of the franchise. As GamingBolt pointed out, the game itself is large in scope and coming out in parts, meaning it’s possible that other platforms will get a chance at the game once all parts have been released for the PlayStation 4. However, for now there’s no telling how long it will take for all parts to be released or if other consoles will ever have a shot at the game. The only known factor is if you want to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake at launch, you’ll have to invest in a PlayStation 4.
