Microsoft’s increasing support for PC as a platform has been great to see in recent years, and it’s safe to say now that PC and Xbox sit pretty much on the same pedestal for them. It’s no surprise, then, that their major exclusive releases are primed to support cross-play across PC and Xbox One (especially seeing as they’ve been so open to cross-play even for third party multiplats). One such game is going to be Gears 5.

The game’s multiplayer design director Ryan Cleven confirmed while speaking with GameSpot that Gears 5 would indeed support cross-play across Xbox One and PC, which really comes as no surprise. What’s also neat is that cross-play during matchmaking in ranked matches won’t be compulsory, and Xbox One players will be able to opt out of being matched with or against PC players (or vice versa), which should be a relief for those worried about the skill gap brought about by the different control methods on both platforms.

Gears 5 is out on September 10 for PC and Xbox One. It recently had its first Versus tech test, while another is schedule to be held from July 22 to July 26.
