Those looking to play Tetris Effect in virtual reality may be surprised to learn that it relies on Valve’s SteamVR API.

Tetris Effect, of course, is an Epic Games Store exclusive, but Epic isn’t shying away from featuring a game that uses SteamVR.

Tetris Efffect supports the HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift headsets, and the game’s FAQ on the store confirms that SteamVR is required for the former. The page notes that those with Oculus Rift headsets can instead launch Oculus VR.



However, Epic noted in a statement to DSOGaming that both headsets require SteamVR to run in the background.

Although this won’t require players to actually log in through Steam to play their Epic Store purchase, many were shocked to see Valve’s API being used in the first place. This may have been unavoidable, however, if Tetris Effect developers wanted to support the HTC Vive.

It’s also worth noting that none of this is required if you do not intend on playing Tetris Effect in VR.
