Recently, we got a slew of information and videos for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s multiplayer. Developer Infinity Ward is looking to raise the bar from previous entries in the series. They will be implementing bigger maps in their Ground War mode where they have already shown 20 on 20 gameplay.
But that isn’t all as Infinity Ward is aiming to support 100 players in a single game of Ground War. This will potentially make Call of Duty an even bigger competitor to the Battlefield franchise that is popular for its high player multiplayer modes.
During an interview with IGN, multiplayer design director Joe Cecot spoke on whether or not a Battle Royale mode will be in the upcoming shooter. “We really focused on Modern Warfare, authentic and gritty, realistic weapons, and it’s a different experience,” he said. “It’s really…just about pulling back to Modern Warfare and keeping that pure.”
“We’re excited for large player counts and things like that, but right now we’re really focused on core multiplayer.”
To me, it makes sense that there is no Battle Royale mode. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is a multiplayer-only title so having the mode in both games would likely hurt Black Ops. I think giving each game an audience to thrive is a better idea than one. With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare being the first game since Call of Duty 2 that has received a brand new engine, it feels like a big leap for the franchise.
We also got a chance to play the multiplayer this week and found it to be “brimming with potential.” Infinity Ward will also be adding a bunch of great PC features including cross-play across all platforms.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will release on October 25 later this year.
