Let’s get one thing straight. The map in The Witcher 3 is absolutly huge. Players can easily spend 1000 hours running around the game’s world and still have plenty of stuff to do. That is why the world in Cyberpunk 2077 being smaller in comparison does not concern me in the slightest. In fact, according to a developer, the map is much denser.
In an interview with GamesRadar during Gamescom, Cyberpunk 2077 producer Richard Borzymowski shared the approach the studio took on fleshing out the game’s map. He stated:
“If you look at pure surface [in terms of] square kilometers, then Cyberpunk 2077 might even be a little bit smaller than The Witcher 3, but it’s the density of the content, taking the world of The Witcher and squeezing it right in, deleting the wilderness between.
“Obviously […] in The Witcher we were an open world with vast lanes and forests in between smaller cities and larger cities like Novigrad, but in Cyberpunk 2077 we’re set in Night City. It’s an integral part of the setting; it’s essentially a protagonist if you want to call it that, so it has to be denser. It wouldn’t give us the end effect we wanted to achieve if the city wouldn’t be believable […] so we packed it full of life.”
He has a great point. Even though the map in The Witcher is larger, there was plenty of wide-open areas such as plains or forests in between towns and objective areas. Since Night City is a full city full of life, it would be a bit weird to not have something to do or someone to meet around every corner. On top of that, since this is a city with giant buildings, they can also flesh out the map vertically as well.
Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release next year on April 16 for PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Google Stadia.
