Blizzard to Open Even More Servers Ahead of Next Week’s WoW Classic

WoW Classic is set to launch this week and the game's servers are filling up incredibly quickly. Blizzard has announced plans to reduce "severe queues" at launch.
Just last week, Blizzard announced that one of their WoW Classic PvP servers is already full. They were urging players to sign up for other realms to ensure the best play experience. Now, two more servers are nearing capacity. To combat overpopulation, the developers have announced plans to open new servers which should reduce log-in queues. Starting Monday, there will be four new servers open for business.

It’s a commendable move by Blizzard; however, I’m not sure how successful it will be in actually getting players to migrate. Many players are operating under an expectation that these high population servers won’t stay that way for long. The nostalgia with this release is very strong. However, while players could flock to the game in its opening weeks, those same players may drop off quickly. So, if you start on a low pop server you might get into the game quicker, but that server might feel dead after the newness wears off. And, with Blizzard charging players to realm transfer in World of Warcraft, you don’t want to be stuck somewhere with no one to play with.

That said, there’s not much Blizzard can do about that except offer free transfer windows down the line. That would give players a chance to move server if the player population does die off after release. Until then, their best course of action is to try to spread out the player base and give each realm the best play experience possible. It’s not the perfect solution, but it at least demonstrates that the team is doing what they can to mitigate the issues that could arise with this particular project.

World of Warcraft Classic will be out for PC on August 27.
