The news came today during a video stream from the Plants Vs. Zombies developer, which introduces the suburban world of Neighborville.
Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville launches October 18 on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Take a look at it in action below.
Neighborville is under invasion. This new setting is made up of a bunch of different regions – from quest-centric free-roam areas to social hubs like Dave Manor, where you can connect with other players and customize your preferred playable plants or zombies with outfits. New teamplay classes are also introduced in the game, which allows you play co-operatively with a friend as a single unit. The game now includes co-op split-screen for any of the available modes.
But it’s head-to-head combat that is described as the heart of the game. The Thunderdome region is a battle arena where two teams face off in up to 24 player matches.
While you wait for the game to release next month, you can play an early edition of the game right now by becoming a Founding Neighbour. By purchasing the digital-only Founder’s Edition – it’s available from now until September 30 – you’ll be able to play through six weeks of content as new areas of the game go live. Each weekly release for the game will build toward the final Standard Edition.
It sounds like a beta test, but it isn’t.
“The Founder’s Edition is not a beta test,” says EA. “With only six weeks to go to our official launch, we’re ready to welcome you to the game! The Founder’s Edition is available to all players, allows for a players’ progression to roll over to the Standard Edition at launch, and focuses on scheduled roll-outs of new parts of the game to build to the final game over this timeframe. It is a program we’re rolling out to highlight our commitment to quality and the PvZ community.”
Rumours of a new game in the franchise have been swirling since July, when publisher EA confirmed in an investor call an upcming Plants vs Zombies shooter was slated to launch later this year. A European trademark for Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville was also filed this week – although it was unclear until now whether this was the Garden Warfare 3 game we’ve been waiting for.
