We’ve known for a bit now that a new movie reboot based on Mortal Kombat has been in the works, but now, the project has become much more real.
Over the weekend, Greg Russo, the screenwriter for the new film adaptation of Mortal Kombat, shared an image on Twitter that revealed filming on the project has now officially started. “May the Elder Gods watch over us!” Russo said in the caption of the tweet. The picture he included showed the clap board for the movie with the lower half of the board containing the Mortal Kombat name and logo.
Not much about the plot of this new Mortal Kombat movie has been made public just yet, but we have learned about some of the castings. The film will star Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Josh Lawson as Kano, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, and many others. This is the first Mortal Kombat movie that has been worked on since 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which is largely remembered as being pretty dang bad.
While this movie has finally started filming, it’ll still be a bit before we see it hit theaters. Mortal Kombat is planned to arrive on March 5, 2021.
