Battlefield dev compares Call of Duty rivalry to fighting Mike Tyson

A former developer of the Battlefield franchise has opened up about what it was like playing the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign as part of its rival development studio. While the two franchises have always had a healthy rivalry, there has also been a measure of respect between the two competing brands (at least on the developer level). Now, one of these developers from that era has told us what he really thinks about it — even comparing it to boxing with a “young Mike Tyson.”

“I am having a hard time believing anything could be better than cod4, which was a complete masterpiece,” ex-Battlefield developer David Goldfarb said on Twitter. The tweet was inquiring about how good the new Modern Warfare campaign was as he quite obviously felt that the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare campaign was pretty good. That’s not where the praise ended, mind.

“When [Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4] came out we were still on [Battlefield: Bad Company],” he continued. “Playing thru their campaign was like getting into the ring w young Mike Tyson.”

David Goldfarb’s thoughts about the O.G. Modern Warfare campaign can certainly be considered an informed opinion considering his experience. He counts Battlefield: Bad Company, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3, Killzone 2, and Payday 2 among the games he worked on, some of which directly competed with the CoD franchise.

What remains to be seen is the answer to his initial question: just how will the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign compare to that of CoD 4? We already know that it’s going to have some pretty disturbing content in it including dismemberment of enemy soldiers. One scene, in particular, has a child fending off a Russian soldier with a screwdriver in an intense fight.

The Call of Duty franchise has never been afraid to have controversial scenes and setpieces, but the first game largely stayed away from them; it was the “No Russian” level in Modern Warfare 2 that really shook things up. CoD 4 managed to do fine without them, and we’ll have to wait and see whether or not the new Modern Warfare can manage to meet or exceed its forebears.
