Taylor Kurosaki for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare team called Survival mod "1%" of the game's content while acknowledging that the business decision came from the top.

A legion of Call of Duty fans and video game consumers alike took to the internet after yesterday’s State of Play presentation, which revealed some Call of Duty: Modern Warfare news they found troubling. After dropping a cinematic trailer for the first-person shooter’s campaign mode, the trailer sneaked in a tidbit about the Spec Ops Survival mode being exclusive to PlayStation 4 owners for almost a year. Infinity Ward narrative director Taylor Kurosaki attempted to downplay the news on Twitter today, engaging with some concerned fans.

Responding to reminders that Activision claimed that “most” post-launch content would release on all platforms simultaneously, Kurosaki clarified that the proper Spec Ops mode, returning from Modern Warfare 2 and 3, will be featured on Xbox One and PC, as well as PS4. The Survival mode aspect of it, which first featured in Modern Warfare 3, is the only timed exclusive and only represents “1% of the game.”

Let’s be honest, “ruining” is an exaggeration. Survival is 1% of the game. The other 99% is simultaneous day and date across all platforms. I’d rather have everyone playing 99% of the content at the same time than 100% of the content some time later.

An earlier tweet from Kurosaki implied that Infinity Ward was not responsible for the exclusivity decision:

It’s all good. We have tried our best to have an open dialogue with our players from day one. We understand letting that trust down. These are complicated decisions that are above our pay grade. Please know we want what’s best for all our players.

n addition to this controversy, an apparent leak seemed to reveal that new weapons will come from in-game supply drops (per /r/Games). Call of Duty fans are likely still reeling over how Treyarch’s Black Ops 4 handled microtransactions. Despite Activision touting the success of the crossplay open beta for Modern Warfare, these alleged actions of business malpractice from Sony and the publisher may set up Infinity Ward for a messy launch. At the very least, Kurosaki’s correspondence with Twitter users shows that the studio is ready for the backlash.
