Modern Warfare players call for ‘boycott’ over PS4 exclusivity

Call of Duty Modern Warfare players on the Xbox One and PC are calling for a boycott of the game after its PS4 Survival mode exclusivity was revealed. This certainly isn’t the first time that fans have said they’ll boycott a game from the Call of Duty franchise, but it is once again raising issues of the business practices of game developers.

During yesterdays State of Play, it was announced that the PS4 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is going to be getting an exclusive game mode called “Survival Mode” for an entire year. This means that players on the Xbox One and PC are going to have to wait if they’d like to play the game in this particular fashion. (It isn’t yet known if Xbox One or PC will be getting any platform exclusives of their own.)

As noted on Reddit, Infinity Ward’s Narrative Director Taylor Kurosaki has said that the PS4 exclusive Survival Mode is “1% of the game”, with the remaining 99% being released simultaneously across all platforms. Unfortunately, this hasn’t done much to quell the anger of fans on PC and Xbox One.

“This is shameful and pathetic,” began a submission by /u/javycane on /r/xboxone. “One can understand map packs for a month but a whole gamemode being locked out? Thievery paying the same for less content than the ps4 owners.”


The PC side of the equation showed an equal level of anger on the matter of PS4 exclusivity.

“I was really happy with this game,” said /u/deflaimun in a submission on /r/pcgaming. “The beta was amazing, ground war was an amazing touch for the series, but we gotta stand up for this kind of crap.”


“Companies need to stop doing that s***,” he continued. “It’s ridiculous, it’s absurd. How does one year of exclusivity benefit anyone? Even people playing on the PS4 will suffer, because they have less people to play with.”


Both threads are filled with comments of people saying that they are canceling their pre-orders or passing on buying the game entirely due to this and other practices by the developers and publisher. Whether or not this boycott will have any meaningful impact on the game’s sales remains to be seen, but what’s clear is that fans are certainly not happy with the situation — even if it’s only “1% of the game.”

Wasn't planning on getting it anyway but this is a lousy move from Activation, I know they have their exclusivity deal but to expect Xbox and PC players to pay the same price for less of a game is stupid. The next COD will be out by the time it is released on those platforms and no one will care about it by then anyway. It a shame to see how bad COD have become over the past few years.

We are paying for a game but only getting a percent of the game and the other percent when the new Cod arrives. That's the problem and I really hope this gets fixed

I don't understand the 1% argument. Are there actually 99 other modes you can play? Also, who's to say what is or isn't 1% or 100% of someone's game? Like, zombies in CoD was around a third of the game, but it was around 0% of mine because I just don't care about it. This stuff absolutely needs to stop happening. The mode is ready for everyone at the same time and not only do you have to wait a day, week, or month, but a whole year? It's absurd. No matter how significant, or insignificant for that matter, you feel the mode is, the Xbox and PC will have an inferior product until the next CoD release. That's a problem.

MW3 apex ops survival was dope af so I see why everyone's upset and a whole year of exclusivity is a bit harsh I think it should be a month max. But I guess we will see how IW responds to this, if at all.

Mario350 the mode is just 1% of the game which is in mw3 the survival mode sucks anyways, id rather have 99% of the game on pc and xbox then just having survival mode on pc and xbox and 100% on ps4, grow a pair people, onlt 1% of the community will be playing survival mode, be glad its not the entire spec ops single player and multiplayer being exclusive to ps4 for a year, ps how else would their exclusive deal with sony would work when were getting everything day one, so it only makes sense for survival mode to be exclusive, pps bo reboot/bo5 might suck like black ops 4 bo3 and bo2 plus people are gonna still be on the game, but again survival mode is just one percent so who cares at least well get the whole game still anyways because it could been worst like i said.

answer me this would you rather have only 1% of the game(survival mode) on pc and xbox or would you like 99% of the game and be able to play the games single player multiplayer and post game(spec ops continuation of singleplayer)? you pick me id pick 99% of the game


This is defiantly has nothing to do with the fact that the mode is any certain percentage of the game. The fact that we are paying the same price for less game is the issue. REGARDLESS of how much of the game it matters for.....

It being only 1% of the game isn't the point people are mad. It's the fact the Xbox and PC players are paying the same price for a game that will have less than PS4, not only that this probably the first of many yearly exclusivity. What if it was campaign or even multiplayer. Just because this one mode is small doesn't make it any less disgusting that Activision would do something like this to their players.

Think it's pointless, hardly anyone will be playing it by then, even if it was 6 months so least people can play it before the new cod comes out but pointless bringing it out when the new cod has

Exactly. It's for that reason that I cancelled my preorder. These companies need to open their eyes and make actual incentives for people to pick a specific platform that doesn't involve cutting off content from another platform. Perhaps a specific weapon skin for your platform.
