Last week it was announced that Civilization VI and its expansions will come to PS4 and Xbox One in November. This means the game will now be on PC and all three major consoles. However, today it was announced that, while no platform will have cross-play multiplayer, PS4 will be the only one that also doesn’t have cloud saves across devices.
There is no cross-play multiplayer between platforms, though Cloud Saves are supported across all versions of the game except for PlayStation 4.

Honestly, it’s a little surprising that it’s taken so long for Civilization VI to come to PS4 and Xbox. The grand strategy game came to Nintendo Switch almost a year ago. You would think a PS4 or Xbox One could handle the port even easily. That said, it’s great to finally see the game coming over. What’s not great is the lack of cloud saves across platforms.
With cross-play being such a hot button issue of late, you’d almost expect a game like Civ to support it out of the gate. However, these things can be tricky, so I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. The fact that PS4 doesn’t allow you to copy a save from Steam to your console seems like a mistake.
You have to assume it’s a Sony choice, given that the feature is available everywhere else. If it was Sony’s decision, it’s an odd one to make after finally agreeing to fully support cross-play in games that allow it. If you’re trying to engender some goodwill by hopping on the bandwagon, it doesn’t make much sense to immediately go the other way on a new issue.
Civilization VI will be out on PS4 and Xbox One on November 22. The game is already available on Nintendo Switch and PC. So, if you can’t wait, feel free to pick it up there.
