Thanks to a new report, it seems we now have an idea of how much it cost Paramount to alter Sonic's look in his upcoming feature film.
Once again, it turns out that you shouldn’t believe everything you might passively read on the Internet.

Within the past day, a new tweet started going semi-viral on Twitter claiming that Paramount Pictures paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $35 million to redesign Sonic in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Many immediately took this at face value and the tweet started blowing up. Now, another report has come about, claiming that this figure is actually much lower.

According to IndieWire, the actual cost to redesign was closer to only $5 million. This information comes from a source who stated that most of the visual effects work in the film wasn’t complete in the first place before Paramount decided to delay the movie until 2020 to overhaul Sonic’s design. Seemingly, the only finalized work for Sonic on the film that had been completed was what was shown in the initial trailer for the movie. Because of this, the decision to change Sonic’s look was easier, and cheaper, than what many may have initially expected.

It’s worth noting that the person who originally tweeted out the potentially-false, $35 million figure has acknowledged their error, but has since restated that their initial estimate was more accurate once you add in the costs to alter marketing, delay the film, and change the merchandise. However, there’s no possible way as of this writing to know how much all of this has cost Paramount.

Regardless of the cost, Paramount decided to go through with the changes and it seems like fans are more receptive to the film now after seeing its new trailer. We’ll see how the full movie fares critically when it releases next year on February 14, 2020.
