John Woo’s Stranglehold Has Returned on PC Thanks to GOG

The former Midway Games-published shooter Stranglehold has re-released today exclusively on GOG.

Over a decade after originally releasing, one of last generation’s more beloved cult classics has today received a new lease on life.

Essentially out of nowhere, John Woo’s Stranglehold has come back to PC today. The third-person shooter, which originally launched on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC back in 2007, hasn’t been available digitally on any platforms in recent years after developer and publisher Midway Games ended up shuttering. GOG is the exclusive platform that is selling Stranglehold with the game retailing for only $9.99.

If you’re unfamiliar with Stranglehold, it was a shooter that was helped produced by famed Chinese actor John Woo. Stranglehold was meant to be a video game sequel to Hard Boiled, one of Woo’s most popular films, and as such was very cinematic in its presentation. The game prominently featured abilities such as bullet-time which was previously made popular in the Max Payne series.

Stranglehold was well-received by many critics when it came out and a sequel called Gun Runner was planned to be in the works. Unfortunately, Midway ended up going bankrupt a few years later in 2009 and the project was canned. Since that time, many fans have just been eager to see Stranglehold become available once again for sale in a digital format. It took nearly a decade to come to fruition, but today’s development finally puts those requests to rest.
