Yesterday NPD released the top-selling games of December 2019. Along with it, we learned what were the twenty best-selling titles of the 2010s and the results were more than expected. Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V took the top spot unsurprisingly with releasing originally on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 back in September of 2013 to later be ported to current-gen hardware as well as PC. It has been in and out of NPD’s monthly top 10 since it’s release and it is looking like it is going to stay that way for the foreseeable future. We here at DualShockers happened to name Grand Theft Auto V the most important game of the decade as well.
The NPD listed twenty games total on their list and half of them were Call of Duty titles, which isn’t a surprise. From 2009 to 2019 a Call of Duty entry took the top spot every year except for 2013 where Grand Theft Auto V took over and 2018 with Red Dead Redemption II, both being Rockstar titles. Another bit worth mentioning is that fourteen of the twenty games are first-person shooters.
It will be interesting to see how this list will look come 2030 and how different the top-selling games may be. In the 2000s there was much more variety in genres including music-rhythm, FPSs, sports, and family-oriented titles. We will have to get back to you about that in ten years’ time.
