The asymmetric multiplayer game will be bundled along with the upcoming Resident Evil 3 remake, but it won’t be considered canonical. Instead, Capcom is calling it a “fun online experience with connections to the RE Universe.”
Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine (via GamesRadar), Resident Evil 3 producer Peter Fabiano explains that certain events within the 4v1 game make it “impossible to fit in the actual timeline.” But thematically speaking, Project Resistance slots right in to the franchise.
“You’ll remember that the Japanese subtitle for RE3 was Last Escape,” Fabiano tells OPM. “Both of these titles have characters that are trying to escape somewhere or something, so thematically it made sense. We also wanted to take up the challenge of building out an online game set in the RE universe.”
We got our first look at Project Resistance last September when Capcom first unveiled the game’s teaser trailer. You can check out some gameplay in action here, which shows four survivors working together while one villanous Mastermind spawns enemies. By destroying security cameras, the survivors can remove the director’s ability to see into certain rooms – but they can also spawn as zombies and directly attack.
Both Resident Evil 3 and Project Resistance will release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on April 3.
