Cyberpunk 2077 Won’t Feature VR Because it Isn’t Viable Yet
In an interview with OnMSFT, CD Projekt Red’s John Mamais says the developer tried using VR for Cyberpunk 2077, but they think it isn’t viable yet.
“We tried VR. We were thinking about VR, but we’re not doing anything with VR. We got the VR dev kits,” says Mamais, head of CD’s Krakow studio, “some things would work in VR but, I think, it’s not really viable yet. You’re not making a lot of money in VR yet. It’s very experimental and niche, yeah. I would like to. I like VR but we’re not doing anything with it yet.”
Also in the interview, Mamais talk about the idea of bringing it to the Nintendo Switch. He says that it might not run on the platform. That being said, he says that’s what they thought about The Witcher 3 and it ended up working on the platform. Additionally, he reiterates the developer’s stance on focusing on the current generation consoles rather than making a port for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
Mamais also goes down memory lane as he talks about the early days of the game. “We had a team going when we were working on The Witcher 3 actually. We built two teams to do the two games in parallel then we cannibalized the second team to come back and work on Witcher 3 before putting everyone on this project.”
A few weeks ago, CD Projekt Red confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 is delayed from its April release date to mid-September. They said the delay will help them polish the game up and playtest it before releasing it into the world. Additionally, they confirmed that the game’s multiplayer mode won’t launch until sometime after 2021.
Cyberpunk 2077 launches on September 17, 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC. The game is available for preorder on Amazon now. While we wait for its release, you can check out a trailer below which gives players a taste of what the gameplay is like.
