We’ve seen the Switch port of The Outer Worlds delayed indefinitely and Nintendo apologized for delaying the delivery of products produced in China. The Taipei game show was also postponed and Overwatch League matches in China were outright canceled. And today, the PUBG Corporation postponed its first esports event of the season, PGS: Berlin.
The postponement was announced on the PUBG Corporation’s page in a press release, according to which, the event was delayed with “the health and safety of our players, employees, and fans” in mind. This also isn’t the only change that could come for PUBG’s esports events this season. Delays may also extend to future events. This decision could be in response to the World Health Organization’s decision to declare the spread of the virus a “global health emergency”. However, the Corporation’s plan to host four global events this year has not changed.
So what exactly was canceled? In the grand scheme, PGS: Berlin is an offline regional qualifier tournament, one of three that will culminate at the end of the season in the 2020 PUBG Global Championship. 32-teams play each other, with the top four qualifying for the championship. The winners of PGS: Berlin split an initial prize pool of $500,000 USD.
PUBG recently launched its 6th season with a host of new changes, namely destructible environments, new weapons and a new map, Karakin. You can watch the trailer for this season down below. PUBG is currently on Steam for $29.99.
