The march toward the next generation took a big step on Monday morning when the Xbox Series X’s specifications were released by Microsoft. While the console itself was officially unveiled at The Game Awards in December, the actual inner workings of the system were made even clearer today. There was a lot to sift through, but CD Projekt Red had one more thing to add: Cyberpunk 2077 will have an Xbox Series X upgrade, and those who own the Xbox One version will get it for free when it’s ready.
Gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades. Owners of #Cyberpunk2077 for Xbox One will receive the Xbox Series X upgrade for free when available. https://t.co/nfkfFLj85w

The studio’s announcement adds to the “Smart Delivery” system detailed in the Series X reveal, a feature that’s meant to ensure that players have access to the best possible version of a respective Xbox title based on their hardware.
From Xbox Head Phil Spencer:
“This technology empowers you to buy a game once and know that – whether you are playing it on Xbox One or Xbox Series X – you are getting the right version of that game on whatever Xbox you’re playing on. We’re making the commitment to use Smart Delivery on all our exclusive Xbox Game Studios titles, including Halo Infinite, ensuring you only have to purchase a title once in order to play the best available version for whichever Xbox console they choose to play on. This technology is available for all developers and publishers, and they can choose to use it for titles that will be release on Xbox One first and come to the Xbox Series X later.”
If what CD Projekt Red is doing means that there is a next-gen version of Cyberpunk, and if this applies to Sony’s competing PlayStation 5 as well, is unknown at this time.
With that said, there is a precedent for something like this. Back when the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launched in the fall of 2013, several publishers offered upgrade programs that allowed players, either via trade-ins or digital codes, to trade in the (at the time) current-gen version of a given title for the newer one at a discount. For example, the Xbox One version of EA’s Battlefield 4 would’ve only cost you $10 if you had the 360 version to hand in.
Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most ambitious and highly-anticipated games of 2020, and CD Projekt Red is a developer known for generating a lot of goodwill with its fans. This move will certainly continue that streak, especially with the game now coming just a few months before the expected debut of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Cyberpunk is due on Sept. 17 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.
