While we don’t have an answer for that yet, we do know that development is going to begin very soon. Pre-production and early development on the game has actually been going on for some time now, but speaking to GameSpot, Final Fantasy 7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase – who was the director and writer of the original FF7 – said that Square Enix will begin proper development of part 2 as soon as the first part has launched, with no breaks in between.
“I think we’ll probably get straight into it,” he said.
Curiously enough, Kitase recognizes the possibility that he might be working on instalments of Final Fantasy 7 Remake for the rest of his career, but he isn’t fazed by that fact. He considers it “a very important thing”, and says that it’s something that has to be done in order to respect the original game’s legacy.
“Final Fantasy VII is a game which, if it just stayed as the original, would just be remembered as something from the past and people wouldn’t be as engaged with it,” he said. “I think in order to be something that continues to be loved and followed by future generations we have to keep updating it as we’re doing now. And in 10 years time, 20 years time, it may need to be done again! So even if this is the only thing that I do in the rest of my career, I won’t be disappointed.”
Final Fantasy 7 Remake is out for the PS4 on April 10, and will be exclusive to the console until April 2021. Reportedly, it will weigh over 100 GB. A demo of the game is out now.
